Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3Rs)

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle are terms we often hear. Do you know that they are organized in order?

Reduce - Use only what you need

Organizations can extend the usage lifetime of assets and equipment when possible, reducing the amount of waste generated

Reuse - Re-use things for the same or new purpose

Working parts such as RAM, LCDs, Keyboards, Power supplies can be recovered for repair and refurbishment of other devices

Recycle - Convert waste into useful products

Circuit boards and metals can be processed to extract the resources instead of mining these from the ground

By following these 3 Rs, We Protect the environment, Conserve limited resources, Reduce space needed for waste disposal facilities and Extend the lifespan of landfills

What needs to be safely Sanitized during recycling?

Storage medium includes solid state drives, hard disk drives and other storage types. These will need to be evaluated and categorized to determine the level of sanitization (Clear, Purge, Destroy) required, according to their data classification by the organization.

For High Security Categorization information, storage medium should be destroyed. For lower information classifications, according to NIST SP 800-88 Rev1 guidelines, the storage medium can be cleared or purged, documented, and then recycled instead of being destroyed.

More information on classifying Security Categorization from NIST SP 800-60 Rev 1

Federal Information Processing Standard 199 (FIPS 199), establishes security categories based on the magnitude of harm expected to result from compromises. Organizations can use this as a general principle to security categorization.

E Waste Sorting and Recycling Process

When any equipment arrives at Databyte Solution, it goes through a process of sorting to maximize reuse and recycling

Incoming equipment gets sorted by:

  • Equipment type - e.g. categories such as network equipment, cables, desktop computers, monitors

  • Condition - working equipment will be purposed for Reuse, while working parts will be stripped from non working equipment for use as spare parts (Reduce)

  • Material type - Hazardous materials such as batteries, ink and toner cartridges are removed during the dismantling process. Useful materials such as metals and printed circuit boards will be sent for material recycling and the extracted materials reused in manufacturing processes (Recycle)

This process maximizes the equipment that will be reused, reducing the waste being generated.

Parts and materials that cannot be reused efficiently are disassembled and sent to dedicated facilities for material extraction and recycling.

Lastly, materials that cannot be recycled are sent for incineration and landfilling.

Circuit Boards

Extraction of metals and materials for recycling

Hard Disk Drives

Extraction of magnetic materials and metals for processing and reuse

CPU Heat Sinks

Metal Recycling

Cables and Connectors

Conductive Metal (e.g. copper) Recycling

What should be Reused and Recycled?

Machines and equipment and / or their parts that have no built in residual memory or information storage should be recycled

These include laptop, desktop, server and networking hardware, stripped of their storage medium such as hard disks, solid state drives and flash memory cards

In certain cases, storage is irremovable such as SSDs on certain Apple machines and other manufacturers' newer devices. Depending on the sensitivity and classification rating of the data stored on the device, a decision will then have to be made to securely erase and purge the data on the machine OR to destroy the entire device circuit board through shredding.

For such devices, as much as possible, we will seek to reuse and recycle parts that are absolutely certain to not contain any forms of information such as LCDs, keyboards, chassis, that can be used for repairs and refurbishment of other devices to prolong their lifespan before going into waste streams.
